FLAT ROCK, Ala. (WHNT) — A Jackson County man was arrested for using a dead man’s identity to buy guns, ammunition and other items, the sheriff’s office says.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said on October 2, 2024, investigators arrested a man for possession of a controlled substance (meth/fentanyl).

Investigators later determined that the name given to them was that of another man who was dead.

The man was later identified as Stuart Sandrock. Investigators then determined that Sandrock had previously been convicted of soliciting to commit murder in San Diego in 1993.

On June 16, a search warrant was executed at Sandrock’s house on County Road 81 in Flat Rock. During the search, investigators found 33 firearms, ammunition, thousands of rounds of ammunition and documents in the name of the dead man that Sandrock was trying to identify himself as.

Sandrock is charged with:

  • 7 counts of identity theft
  • Obstructing justice using false identity
  • Certain persons forbidden to possess firearms
  • 2 counts of possession of short-barreled rifle
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

JCSO said additional charges are being pursued at this time. He is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail with a $45,500 bond.
