DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Decatur Police Department says two people were arrested Wednesday morning after police responded to reports of gunfire.

DPD said around 4:40 a.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Courtney Drive SW after gunshots were reported in the area.

Once officers arrived, the department said it was reported that a man and a woman had been seen breaking into a vehicle. According to DPD, when someone confronted the pair, the man fired several shots before the two fled on bicycles.

Police said that three occupied apartments and at least three unoccupied vehicles were found to have been hit by the gunfire. DPD said officers quickly located the two and identified them as Joshua Cunningham and Janae Matthems, both of Decatur.

According to the department, while the two were being detained, Cunningham attempted to flee and discard the gun, but was taken back into custody, and the gun was recovered.

DPD said Cunningham is charged with unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, three counts of shooting into an occupied building, and three counts of shooting into an unoccupied vehicle. He is being held at the Morgan County Jail on a $17,500 bond, according to police.

Matthews is charged with unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle and is being held on a $2,500 bond, according to the department.

DPD said additional charges are expected.
