Summary

  • Kojima Productions confirms Aaron Guzikowski to pen the upcoming Death Stranding animated feature
  • The film will be developed by animation studio Line Mileage and will feature an original storyline set in the game’s universe

Kojima Productions has officially confirmed that Death Stranding is getting an anime adaptation, with acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski — best known for HBO’s Raised by Wolves — attached to write the project.

The announcement marks a significant expansion of Hideo Kojima’s genre-defying universe, which has already spawned a live-action film in development with A24. Guzikowski’s involvement signals a thoughtful, emotionally layered approach to the adaptation, aligning with the game’s meditative themes of isolation, connection and existential dread. Currently in development with animation studio Line Mileage, the film will tell an original story set within the Death Stranding universe, rather than retelling the game’s main narrative.

News of this adaptation was first teased by Kojima himself during an interview with Vogue Japan last month. In that conversation, the visionary game creator emphasized his enduring desire to explore storytelling beyond traditional interactive formats. While details about the animation studio and release timeline remain under wraps, Kojima’s track record of cinematic ambition, evident in his work on Metal Gear Solid and the original Death Stranding.

At the time of writing, no official release window has been announced. However, with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach slated for release on June 26, 2025, anticipation continues to build for the next evolution of Kojima’s immersive, cross-media storytelling.
