LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office and Florence Police Department say they have seen more domestic violence cases in the last few weeks.
One Place of the Shoals is a facility that is there to help any victims.
“We provide adequate care to people who have been victims of not just domestic violence but of elder abuse or sexual assaults. We have a wonderful team here of a victim advocate that will help anybody through the process,” says Jonathan White with the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office.
White says there has been an increase in domestic violence situations and sexual assault cases. One of those domestic violence cases involved a man strangling a woman, and then a few days ago, law enforcement arrested someone for a sexual assault at a Mapco gas station in Florence.
“We probably average at least five cases over the course of the weekend that come into us so you know, I can only imagine if that’s what’s getting reported,” White said. “There’s others out there that are not getting reported, it’s always around this time, when it gets hot out, and people are out and about”.
White says, if you are a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault.
“It does take a lot of courage to come forward, but again, that’s what we’re here for. We know we care very deeply about what we do when we take this job very seriously, so I don’t want anybody to feel afraid we are here for those victims and we are gonna do everything that we can to make sure that they’re accommodated and taken care of,” White said.
One Place of the Shoals is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and is located downtown on Tennessee Street.
