TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Peter Mohler has been named as the 30th president of the University of Alabama.
On Monday, Mohler was announced as the newest president of UA. Mohler, who served as acting president at Ohio State University in 2023, will succeed Stuart Bell, who led the university for almost a decade before announcing he was stepping down earlier this year.
“Dr. Mohler is uniquely equipped to build upon The University of Alabama’s strong foundation and lead this institution into an even brighter future,” UA System Chancellor Sid J. Trant said Monday. “He is a champion for the power of public higher education to transform lives and communities through teaching, research and service, and he will advance our flagship mission through his bold, student-centered and visionary leadership.”
Mohler’s tenure at OSU began in 2012 as associate dean of research at the College of Medicine, rising to serve in several senior roles such as vice dean of research, chair of the department of physiology and cell biology, director of the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, chief scientific officer for the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and executive vice president for research innovation and knowledge.
“Over the coming months, my priority will be simple: listening. Listening to campus community members, university supporters, alumni, government leaders and community partners, to learn what makes UA special to each and every one of them and then work together to chart our pathway forward,” Mohler said. “We’ll build on the exceptional work happening here today and will ensure that every student that leaves this university is ready to succeed and make a difference.”
Mohler comes as the university has reached record enrollment of nearly 41,000 students during the 2024-25 school year and a $1 billion endowment.
“To have a chance to serve this university at this moment is the opportunity of a lifetime,” he said. “The University of Alabama is distinctly positioned to ascend as the nation’s premier public flagship university. The future of the Capstone is incredibly bright and I can’t wait to get started.”
Mohler is married and has three children.
Mohler will start at UA July 21.
