Israel and Iran exchanged deadly barrages on Saturday, a day after Israel launched an attack that targeted the Iranian nuclear program and dealt a major blow to the country’s military chain of command.
The assaults have raised the prospect of a wider conflict, though months of Israeli assaults have weakened the military abilities of Iran and its proxies.
In Iran, explosions on Friday jolted people out of their beds as warplanes dropped bombs. Some recalled scenes of confusion and fear and drew comparisons to the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s.
In Israel, people huddled in bomb shelters as air-raid sirens wailed outside, warning of incoming missile fire.
