HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) — The Madison County Board of Education approved the construction bid for a new middle school in Hazel Green on Thursday.
The bid for the project was awarded to Fite Building Company for $53.5 million. The bid also includes athletic fields, dugouts and field lighting.
The new facility will be built on the north side of the existing high school campus and is designed to serve 7th and 8th graders from both Hazel Green and Meridianville.
The new school will accommodate up to 1,200 students.
In addition to the new middle school, Meridianville Middle School will transition into an intermediate school, serving students in grades 4, 5 and 6. This will help with the overcrowding at Hazel Green Elementary School.
“The approval of the Hazel Green Middle School is a significant step forward for our community. This new facility will provide our students with the resources they need to thrive academically, athletically, and socially. We are committed to investing in our children’s future, and this school is a testament to that commitment,” District 1 Board Member David Vess said.
The new school is expected to open in the 2027-2028 school year.
