Dakota Johnson is serving us constant style inspiration, and her new brunette summer hair color is no different. While promoting her latest film, The Materialists, newly-single Johnson has pulled off everything from sheer gowns to plunging necklines. But through it all, she’s never strayed from her signature bangs and brown hair color, which recently got a glossy update.
According to Johnson’s longtime colorist Tracey Cunningham, the shade is a new “glossed chestnut” that’s perfect for the low-maintenance vibes of summertime.
“It’s a slightly warm, high-shine brunette with multidimensional tones—think deep chocolate with just a touch of golden warmth,” says Cunningham. “What makes it special is the brilliance of the color: It’s reflective, healthy-looking, and incredibly wearable. It’s the kind of color that looks rich but never flat, and it’s flattering on so many skin tones.”
Another benefit? Glossed chestnut was designed to look stunning in photographs, which comes in handy during summer wedding season. “Dakota always needs something that photographs beautifully in any light, especially with all her upcoming press and red-carpet moments,” says Cunningham.
It also leans into one of the biggest hair color trends of the moment: quiet luxury hair. Rich shades that require minimal upkeep are huge among celebs like Johnson, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kendall Jenner. “It’s rich and dimensional, with just the right amount of warmth to catch the light,” says Cunningham. “It feels luxurious, modern, and low-commitment. It’s the kind of color that turns heads without trying too hard.”
Glossed chestnut works best on natural brunettes, though anyone can get the look with the right color formula. Cunningham advises talking to your colorist first and finding the right mix for your specific hair color and type.
“It’s always important to note that starting hair color is going to factor into any color transformation,” says Cunningham. “For Dakota’s specific glossed chestnut, it’s all about strategically layering product. I love using a demi-permanent color.”
Cunningham used Schwarzkopf Professional’s Igora Vibrance to customize Johnson’s shade. “It’s not about one-size-fits-all—it’s about creating a rich brunette that feels effortless, flattering, and totally unique to the person wearing it,” she adds.

When it comes to upkeep, Cunningham says keeping hair happy and healthy is the best way to maintain your color. “I also always recommend using a heat protectant, especially when clients are styling frequently, and a deep-conditioning hair mask one to two times per week, depending on hair type. Protecting the hair from heat is key to maintaining that healthy, glossy finish that makes glossed chestnut really shine,” she says.
