UPDATED: Nintendo’s Miyamoto just posted on social that summer 2027 will fire off at the box office with The Legend of Zelda movie, now dated for May 7, 2027. Disney has an untitled movie already on the weekend.

“For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027, Miyamoto wrote.

“It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.”

This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it…

This is great news, though a ways away as the emphasis of summer kicking off during the first weekend of May has dwindled post strikes: Fall Guy didn’t kick us off last year sans a Marvel movie and this year’s Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* at a $74.3M opening wasn’t up to the $100M+ starts we’re well acquainted with. Recently Disney left the first weekend of summer 2026 naked after moving the Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Doomsday movie from the first weekend of May 2026 to Dec. 18, 2026.

No castings yet on Zelda.

PREVIOUSLY, MARCH 28, 7:29 AM: Today Nintendo, very early in the morning L.A. time, announced via its Nintendo Today! app that the live-action film The Legend of Zelda will hit theaters on March 26, 2027. Wes Ball is directing, and Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad are producing. The only other movie going that weekend is an untitled Legendary Warner Bros. Monsterverse feature.

T.S. Nowlin is now writing the screenplay. Nowlin is repped by CAA and Management 360 and McKuin.

PREVIOUSLY, NOV. 7, 2023: Sony is making sure its has its future theatrical franchises covered as the actors strike appears to be winding down: The studio is co-financing with Nintendo a live-action feature of popular videogame franchise The Legend of Zelda.

The Maze Runner franchise and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes filmmaker Wes Ball is directing.

Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) is penning the adaptation. He’s repped by Verve. Ball is producing the movie with his producing partner Joe Hartwick Jr. under their Oddball Entertainment banner.

The videogame, created by the Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, launched in 1986. It follows the elf-like warrior Link and elegant Princess Zelda as they fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord-turned-demon king.

Nintendo saw huge success this spring with Illumination and Universal on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an animated feature take of videogame franchise. It ranks as the second-highest-grossing pic of the year with $1.36 billion. More than 50% of Zelda will be funded by Nintendo, with Sony releasing theatrically worldwide.

The Legend of Zelda will be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions.

A release date has not been set.

Movies based on videogames, once unfertile IP for Hollywood at the box office, have blossomed in recent years. Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog Sega franchise has minted more than $725M worldwide, with a third film dated in December 2024.

As of September, the Legend of Zelda franchise has sold over 150 million units.

We hear a live-action take of The Legend of Zelda has been in the works for several years, with Arad being a linchpin to its delivery.

Sony had a big hit earlier this summer with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse which has grossed over $690M.
