PHOENIX — A fourth poultry farm in Maricopa County tested positive for bird flu, officials announced Friday afternoon.

The name of the facility was not released, and the detection was caught during routine testing, according to an Arizona Department of Agriculture (AZDA) release.

Details on fourth Maricopa County farm infected with bird flu

The virus was caught early before the birds could exhibit any symptoms. The poultry at the farm were too young to produce eggs, according to AZDA.

Samples from the location were submitted to the Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Lab on Wednesday and sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory for testing.

The risk to the public remains low, according to AZDA. People who were in close contact with the birds are the most at risk.

Poultry at the facility are being disposed of through a heat and activation process to prevent the spread of the virus.

Last week, bird carcasses were temporarily buried at the third infected Maricopa poultry farm in order to prevent the infection from spreading.

Bird remains from the other two affected farms were placed into certified containers and taken to a landfill.

This marks the fourth time this year that avian influenza has been detected in Arizona.

Last week, the virus was detected at a poultry farm in Maricopa County.
