PHOENIX — Chandler will begin offering overnight heat relief on a regular basis starting June 13 at a downtown community center.
Overnight services were initially planned for availability only during excessive heat warnings, according to a press release. Overnight relief will be available through Sept. 12. It and eight cooling centers around the city opened on May 1.
“During the summer months, you can’t tell the difference between excessive and extreme temperatures — it’s just dangerously hot,” Riann Balch, the city’s community development and resources senior manager, said. “We want to ensure those in need can sleep safely in a comfortable place for the night.”
What should people seeking overnight heat relief in Chandler plan for?
People requiring assistance should first check in at AZCEND near Arizona Avenue and Frye Road, as early as 6 p.m. each night.
They will be taken to the Chandler Senior Center for dinner and a place to sleep away from the heat. Air conditioning, shower and laundry services are part of what’s available.
In the morning, people will be returned to AZCEND at 5:30 a.m. where they’ll have breakfast and other daytime services available.
