Though Sierra Johnson and I met outside Ponce City Market in Atlanta, our conversation quickly turned to another Southern city.
Ms. Johnson, a hospital technician, was out with her sister on a Saturday in May. She had an alluring presence noticed by several passers-by, who were stopping to compliment her cowboy attire. She’d just had a manicure, she said, and had plans to celebrate her 26th birthday that evening at Pappadeaux, a seafood restaurant that originated in Houston. She added that her outfit for the occasion took inspiration from another Houston native: Beyoncé.
“I just feel so natural in it,” said Ms. Johnson, who added that she has been trying to incorporate more Western wear into her everyday wardrobe.
