Summary

  • JJJJound has partnered with Korean artist Gyuhuan Lee to release a special collection comprising two paper lamps set for release on June 5.
  • Each lamp utilizes JJJJound’s packaging materials combined with Korean Hanji paper, resulting in a unique piece of collectible homeware.

JJJJound‘s latest collaboration departs from its fashion-focused projects to present a first-of-its-kind JJJJound lamp crafted by Korean artist Gyuhuan Lee using the label’s packaging materials. Aiming to maximize the role of packaging materials beyond their usual function, the design’s resourceful approach explores the intersection of branding, consumer culture, and centuries-spanning handicraft.

Drawing from the grid proportions of minimalist architecture, the lamps boast a square shape and are offered in a short and a tall edition. When turned off, the lamps resemble mundane cardboard packages, but when turned on, a warm, soft glow transforms the lantern into a refined piece of collectible homeware.

Lee, known for his refined pieces made from upcycled paper materials, utilized JJJJound’s paper bags and box tape for the project. With his skills rooted in traditional Eastern craftsmanship, the artist layered JJJJound’s materials with Korean Hanji paper, a historic textile applied to heritage interiors. The final result is a synthesis of contemporary mass-produced components and traditional craftsmanship, much in line with JJJJound’s design practice, which often involves subtle, quality-focused updates to existing designs.

In previous projects, Lee has utilized everything from McDonald’s Happy Meal bags, Nike shoe boxes, and Hermès Plein Air blotting papers to create unique furniture pieces and lighting designs. His work represents a growing movement in design that adapts recognizable found and upcycled materials as components for new, imaginative objects.

The JJJJound x Gyuhuan Leee lamps are set to drop on JJJJound.com on June 5 at 12 PM EST.
