(NEXSTAR) — Some major changes are coming to your grocery store newsstands: Soon, magazines like In Touch Weekly, Life & Style, Closer Weekly and First for Women will no longer be there. The celebrity news and lifestyle outlets, which were geared toward female readers, will publish their final issues in June, the company told The Hollywood Reporter.
The magazines’ owner, McClatchy Media Company, first broke the news to THR, after staff were informed of impending layoffs. Nexstar has also reached out to McClatchy for comment.
“Despite the best efforts of many of our talented colleagues, we have been unable to develop a profitable business model for four of our magazine titles. First for Women, In Touch, Life & Style and Closer will publish their final editions between June 20 and 27,” McClatchy spokesperson Julie Pendley said in a statement to THR.
Of the four publications set to cease operations, First For Women has been around the longest. The magazine has been in publication since 1989 and as of 2025, had a total audience of around 2.5 million, per 2024 data. The average age of readers is 54.
Meanwhile, In Touch Weekly and Life & Style were launched in 2002 and 2004, respectively, while Closer — an American version of the British tabloid of the same name — has been published since 2013.
It goes without saying that print media has been in a tailspin for at least a decade, due to several factors, including cost of production and distribution and competition from other digital media.
Late last year, McClatchy merged with accelerate360, a distribution, logistics, and media company, though it remains under the McClatchy name. The company acquired Us Weekly, which remains in production, through the merger. Other McClatchy magazines include Woman’s World and Drew Barrymore’s DREW magazine.
To THR, Pendley added: “We are grateful for the meaningful contributions of the affected employees and are providing support during the transition.”
