Dust off your tap shoes and limber up those jazz hands: The Tony Awards 2025 are almost here.
The Tonys, which honor the best of American theater and Broadway, are not just an opportunity to show off how cultured you might be (you saw Hamilton at the Public, we know) and to test your vocal range against glass-shattering soprano performances, but also, in a year fraught with political tension, especially where it comes to funding for the arts, there are sure to be some powerful statements.
This year’s audience is sure to be starry: There will be Broadway legends, sure, like Audra McDonald, whose six career Tonys make her the winningest performance in the awards’ history, but Hollywood A-listers like George Clooney, nominated for his Broadway debut this year in Good Night, and Good Luck will suit up for the night. Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Nick Jonas, Sadie Sink, Nicole Scherzinger, Bob Odenkirk, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, and more also treaded the boards in Midtown this year—even if you don’t know your stage left from your house right, the Tonys will likely have a few familiar faces.
Whether you’re ready to rush the stage door post-show, or you just like statuettes and black-tie attire, here’s everything you need to know about the Tony Awards 2025.
What are the Tony Awards?
The Tony Awards is the annual gala where the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League dole out American theater’s highest honors, formally known as the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre. Perry, the awards’ namesake, was more commonly known as Tony and, before her death in 1946, was a stage actor, producer, and director who cofounded the American Theatre Wing. The first Tony Awards were held in her honor in 1947.
Broadway productions that opened between April 26, 2024, and April 27, 2025, are eligible to be nominated. This year, the Tonys have 26 competitive categories.
