Over the past few months, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been tied to countless Aaron Rodgers reports and rumors. Despite all of the action between the two sides in the media, no deal has been made yet.
Instead, the Steelers still have two quarterback options on their roster. Mason Rudolph and Will Howard are the current players they have at the position.
While Rodgers is expected to sign at some point, it’s not a guarantee. That has led to a lot of speculation about what Pittsburgh should do if Rodgers decides to pass on the opportunity to play for the Steelers in 2025.
A new option has been suggested. It would be a shocking change of direction, but it could actually work.

Bleacher Report analyst Brent Sobleski has named Howard as the team’s best quarterback option. Making Howard the starting quarterback would be a massive surprise, but it could become a legitimate route to consider.
“The 6’4″, 236-pound rookie has the frame, athleticism and enough arm talent to make an impression, as long as he continues to improve his lower-body mechanics and post-snap reads,” Sobleski wrote.
“The Steelers could have selected Howard two or even three rounds earlier and no one would have blinked. Now, he’s the best chance for the franchise to get out of the rut it’s stuck in, either by playing well above his draft status or performing poorly enough to place the Steelers squarely among the top 10 draft-pick range for the first time in 25 years.”
Howard is fresh off a national championship run with the Ohio State Buckeyes last year during the 2024 college football season. He has elite leadership skills to go along with a top-tier work ethic and good football ability.

If this did end up becoming the route Pittsburgh decided to go, Howard would be facing a ton of pressure. While it’s unlikely he’ll be the starter this season, this is an eye-opening idea. Should Rodgers choose not to sign, Howard would offer the Steelers a potential long-term answer under center.
However, the reality of the situation is that the team would go from a potential Super Bowl contender with Rodgers to a work in progress that needs some time.
Pittsburgh fans and the team continue to wait for Rodgers’ decision. Hopefully, that decision is made in the near future so the Steelers can move forward either way.
