LEIGHTON, Ala. (WHNT) — An investigation into a fire at an old middle school in Leighton led to police identifying and locating two underage suspects who may have committed arson.
The Leighton Police Department said officers were dispatched to a structure fire at the Old Leighton Middle School building, located at the intersection of Jimmy Hughes Street and 1st Street, alongside the Leighton Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday.
LPD said that witnesses saw two suspects leaving the school. Fire personnel believed the fire may have been the result of arson.
The department, in collaboration with the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office, launched an investigation. During their investigation, police said they identified two underage suspects and a vehicle that may have been involved and issued a local BOLO (Be On the Lookout).
According to LPD, the Florence Police Department located the suspects. Their names will not be released at this time.
LPD said the investigation is still active and ongoing, and updates will be provided as they become available.
