Veteran left-handed reliever Genesis Cabrera, who was designated for assignment by the New York Mets over the weekend, cleared outright waivers and rejected his outright assignment, instead electing free agency. It didn’t take him long to find a new home.

On Tuesday — the same day he elected free agency — Cabrera signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs, where he’ll hope to earn a spot in their major league bullpen sooner rather than later.

Cabrera, 28, appeared in six games with the Mets this season, allowing three earned runs with seven strikeouts over 7.2 innings for a 3.52 ERA.

He elected to head back to free agency rather than going to the minor leagues, but will now seemingly join the minors in a different organization on another National League contender.

Cabrera signed a minor league deal with the Mets in the offseason.

He struggled in Triple-A this year, sporting a 7.88 ERA across seven appearances. However, he still earned a major league call up, and was much better in the majors. He’ll look to continue that success in Chicago if/when he receives a call up.

Cabrera initially signed with the Tampa Bay Rays as an international free agent in 2013.

The left-hander was then traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he debuted in 2019.

Cabrera spent parts of five seasons with St. Louis, sporting a 4.14 ERA across 174 appearances before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. He finished the 2023 season with Toronto and spent the entire 2024 season there, sporting a 3.34 ERA over 98 appearances across the two years.

Across 278 career appearances, Cabrera has a 3.88 ERA with 275 strikeouts over 283.1 innings. He has five pitches, mainly using a sinker and curveball while also mixing in a four-seam fastball and cutter. He also uses an occasional split finger.

The current lefties in the Chicago bullpen are Drew Pomeranz and Caleb Thielbar, while Luke Little and Tom Cosgrove are left-handed options on the 40-man roster.
