Throughout the course of the 2025 NFL offseason, the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy were constantly mentioned in the rumor mill. While the two sides worked on a new deal, the progress was slow.

Due to the slow progress, a lot of speculation began circulating. Things even got to the point where trade rumors were popping up regarding Purdy.

Even though there was a lot of noise, the 49ers and Purdy were able to get a new deal done. The two sides agreed to five-year, $265 million contract extension to keep the franchise quarterback in town long-term.

Following the deal getting done, there have been a lot of critics of the move. While opinions come from everywhere, the most recent criticism for San Francisco came from a former NFL star wide receiver.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who happens to help train 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, spoke out and revealed his opinion that San Francisco overpaid Purdy.

“I believe they did overpay for Brock Purdy,” Houshmandzadeh said. “I would have given Brock Purdy $47 million a year. That would have been the most I’m giving him. We needed you last year. You went 1-6 against playoff teams. We had guys hurt — Christian McCaffrey was out, Trent Williams was out, Brandon Aiyuk got hurt — and you couldn’t really get it done.”

What exactly is Houshmandzadeh talking about when he speaks out on Purdy not getting it done during the 2024 season? The numbers back up his statement.

During the 2024 campaign, Purdy completed 65.9 percent of his passes for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also ran for 323 yards and five more scores.

Those numbers were down from the 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions he put up in 2023. He also completed 69.4 percent of his pass attempts.

At 25 years old, Purdy is now under more pressure. With the kind of money he is being paid, the 49ers will need more consistency from him. If he’s unable to provide that, the criticism will grow much louder.

Purdy has been a bonafide star since taking over as San Francisco’s starting quarterback in 2022. He’s facing pressure and there was frustration following the 2024 season, but keeping him in town was a must. The 49ers may have overpaid, but Purdy will look to quiet those comments in the coming years.
