EXCLUSIVE: Amazon MGM Studios has optioned the short story “Morning Person” by Emily Ziff Griffin, enlisting the author to pen a feature adaptation.

Exploring the high-wire act of modern womanhood, the story chronicles a day in the life of a sharp-witted supermom whose marriage abruptly falls apart, challenging her to return to the corporate world after a 15-year hiatus.

Cathy Shulman will produce through her Welle Entertainment banner, alongside Mark Subias through his Arey Cove Media banner. Griffin will exec produce alongside Kate Roughan of Welle Entertainment.

Griffin is known for penning the critically acclaimed novel Light Years, which she developed for television with Amblin Entertainment. Currently, she’s also scripting a feature adaptation of her New Yorker essay “The Last Dance With My Dad” for Fifth Season and producer Lynette Howell Taylor. Her essays have also appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Yale Review, Self, Refinery29, and more. Previously, she co-founded Cooper’s Town Productions with the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, a company she ran for 10 years which produced the Oscar-winning film Capote, among others.

Welle Entertainment’s Schulman is an Academy Award winner who recently worked with Amazon MGM on The Idea of You, Michael Showalter’s hit May-December romance, starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, which adapted the book by Robinne Lee. Recently, she’s also worked on two big projects with Viola Davis: epic action drama The Woman King for Sony and Showtime series The First Lady, for which she served as showrunner and executive producer.

An industry veteran who has spent the last 25 years representing writers, directors, actors, composers, and other fine artists, as an agent and manager, most recently as a Partner at UTA, Subias launched Arey Cove Media, where he is developing and producing theater, television and film, last year.

Griffin is represented by CAA and attorney Robert Marshall of Greenberg Glusker.
