While HBO Max‘s The Pitt readies itself for filming on Season 2, star Tracy Ifeachor teased what might be coming through the doors of the emergency department next, including what the breakout drama has in store for her character Dr. Collins, both romantically and professionally speaking.

“Listen, there is going to be an amazing cast in Season 2 — just as there was in Season 1. I’m just going to leave it there,” she told Us Weekly in a new interview. “I’m not a [plot] ruiner. I’m not even going to tell you who is or is not going to come back. I’m just going to say I want you to watch Season 2 and just enjoy it as much as you’ve watched Season 1. Hopefully there’ll be Seasons 3 and 4 and 7.”

As creator and executive producer R. Scott Gemmill teased previously, there will be some changes heading into the sophomore installment, including a time jump and cast additions, as well as some onscreen promotions in the mix for current cast members in tune with medical students’ rotation schedules. “We’ll see everybody, for the most part, and some people might be working different hours and different shifts, but it’s pretty much the same crew,” he said last month.

For her part, Ifeachor departed the procedural in Episode 11 following her character’s miscarriage mid-shift — but not before she shared a tender moment with Noah Wyle‘s Dr. Robby, which revealed details of their previous romantic relationship, including an abortion she once had when she wasn’t ready to be a mother and was uncertain about the longevity of their partnership.

“You never know how a story is going to break. [That break] did enable me to go off and do another project, which I’m so excited about. I can’t wait for everyone to see it when I’m allowed to talk about that,” the Wonka and The Originals actress shared.

Though The Pitt follows and will maintain its unique 24-esque, real-time format — in tandem with the ED’s relentless pace — there are several references to the relationship previously shared by attending physician Dr. Robby and senior resident Dr. Collins.

“I am always a hopeful romantic. I would have loved to have seen that toward the end of the season,” Ifeachor said of the two characters. “I remember saying to Noah one time, I was like, ‘I’ve been trying to flirt with you [on screen] all season. You have not even given me the time of day.’ I [as Collins] was always trying to and I felt like it was definitely in the script.” She added, “I would say there’s going to be lots of surprises to come.”

Even aside from the outright references by characters like charge nurse Dana (Katherine LaNasa), viewers with their eyes peeled will notice everything from yearning glances to a near-interrogation about a cop who seems to be flirting with Collins.

“Noah was always watching everything,” Ifeachor explained. “He is very into the camera angles and how it will be shot and how it will be received in the environment. Sometimes he’s written the episode so he’s going to watch the scenes get filmed. Sometimes he might have an idea of how the medical bit is directed because he has so many hats that he’s wearing before he is even in the scene. So [our characters’ chemistry] wasn’t something that we ever actually talked about. Maybe that adds to it because maybe it is something they actually haven’t actually talked about.”

She concluded of her scene partner, “We just really vibed. We are just both very present and in the scene and very available to each other … Hopefully we learned to really trust each other. You are working together and you don’t know each other. It’s just such an intense show. Then suddenly you’re having to do these scenes where you have history. So it was a real journey.”
