UPDATED with latest: A psychiatrist who examined a Mississippi man accused of ramming his vehicle into the front gate of Jennifer Aniston‘s Bel Air home has determined the man is mentally incompetent to stand trial. However, a second psychiatrist was appointed today after the man’s attorney said his client wanted another evaluation.
Deputy Public Defender Robert Krauss told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi that Dr. Phani Tumu is of the opinion that Jimmy Wayne Carwyle is “currently incompetent to stand trial,” but said that the 48-year-old defendant was asking for a “second opinion.”
The judge appointed a second psychiatrist, Dr. Kory Knapke, to examine Carwyle, who is due back at the Hollywood courthouse for another hearing next Thursday.
Carwyle — who appeared briefly in the Hollywood courtroom — is charged with one felony count each of stalking and vandalism, along with an aggravating circumstance of the threat of great bodily harm.
At a May 8 hearing, Deputy Public Defender Toral Malik entered a not guilty plea on behalf of her client, but questioned his mental competency. More on that below.
Carwyle has allegedly been harassing Aniston since March 2023 by “sending her unwanted social media, voicemail and email messages,” according to the District Attorney’s Office. Carwyle allegedly made multiple social media posts referencing the actress, with some of them referring to her as his wife.
Carwyle has remained behind bars since his arrest.
He faces up to three years in prison if he is convicted as charged, according to prosecutors.
PREVIOUSLY on May 8: The court appearance today of the man accused of stalking Jennifer Aniston and crashing his car into her property didn’t quite go as planned.
Looking at three years in prison if found guilty on the stalking and vandalism felonies, Jimmy Wayne Carwyle arrived shirtless and wrapped in a state-issued blue towel at his arraignment at the L.A. Superior Court’s Airport Courthouse Thursday. In custody since the incident at the Friends‘ star’s Bel-Air home on May 5, the disheveled and disorientated 48-year-old seemed to have little comprehension today as to what was going on.
After conferring with Carwyle’s defense attorney, Judge Keith L. Schwartz ordered a mental competencyevaluation for the Mississippi man. As prosecutors from the L.A. County District Attorney’s office looked on, the judge also suspended the criminal proceedings against Carwyle as the evaluation is conducted.
To that, Judge Schwartz told Carwyle “not to have any contact with Jennifer Aniston” and ordered the still-incarcerated middle-aged man to “stay 100 yards away from her residence.”
There was no indication when the mental competency evaluation would be complete.
Aniston was not in court today for the proceedings.
PREVIOUSLY, MAY 7 PM: The Mississippi man who crashed his car through the gates of Jennifer Aniston’s Bel-Air mansion on May 5 is being charged with stalking as well as vandalism, the Los Angeles County District Attorney said today.
Being held on a statutory bail at $150,000, Jimmy Wayne Carwyle faces up to three years in a California state prison if found guilty on the felonies. The 48-year-old will be arraigned Thursday in LA Superior Court.
According to the LA DA’s office: “Between March 1, 2023, and May 5, 2025, Carwyle is accused of repeatedly harassing the victim, Jennifer A., sending her unwanted social media, voicemail, and email messages.”
Those alleged actions took a dangerous turn when Carwyle smashed into Aniston’s property on Monday at around 12:20 pm PT. Aniston was home when the incident took place, though was not injured. Her security guards held Carwyle until the LAPD arrived, law enforcement reports.
“Stalking is a crime that can quickly escalate from harassment to dangerous, violent actions, threatening the safety of victims and our communities,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman declared Wednesday as more details of Carwyle’s actions and intentions towards the Friends star were revealed. “My office is committed to aggressively prosecuting those who stalk and terrorize others, ensuring they are held accountable.”
Led by Deputy District Attorney Sam Hulefeld, the case is being handled by the DA’s Stalking and Threat Assessment Team.
Designed by prolific modern architect A. Quincy Jones, Aniston’s home was renovated in 1965 by Frederick Fisher and later redone by The Morning Show actress and ex-husband Justin Theroux. The 8,500 square-foot property was purchased for just under $21 million in the early 2010s. It sits on a 3.4 acre lot in pricey Bel-Air.
