PHOENIX — Mayor Kate Gallego highlighted Phoenix’s economic growth during an optimistic state of the city address on Tuesday.
The 37-minute speech streamed on Phoenix’s YouTube page explained the way city leaders are addressing challenges, expanding opportunity and building infrastructure to support long-term financial growth.
“We’re seeing more chaos and confusion coming from our government in Washington than ever before. Markets swing with every whim, and that constant uncertainty — it affects our economy and throws wrenches into our daily lives,” Gallego said. “I’m glad that’s not the case in our city. Here in Phoenix, we’re showing how government is supposed to work.”

Gallego was especially proud to discuss the way leaders are expanding career opportunities in the city.
“We’ve created more jobs and good jobs — the kind that change lives,” Gallego said. “Wages are up nearly 50% in five years. We’re building the water and transportation infrastructure we need to thrive.”
This was Gallego’s first state of the city address since beginning her second, full four-year term on April 21. She was reelected in November 2024.

She also emphasized Phoenix’s role as a thriving hub for business and bioscience.
“Clin-Path, the leading pathology services provider to 11 hospitals in the Valley, has opened a new facility at the Phoenix Cotton Center, just south of Sky Harbor, to speed up the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases so treatment can begin sooner,” Gallego said. “Also at the Cotton Center, the University of Jamestown is launching a program to train pathologists.”
That is the first masters-level physician’s assistant program for pathologists in Arizona, Gallego said. It’s also the second program of its kind west of the Mississippi River.
She touted other recent wins, such as Mayo Clinic in Phoenix launching a $1.9 billion expansion project and Arizona State University launching a new medical school in downtown Phoenix.
One of the wins that took place last year was expanded investment from the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).
“The world’s most advanced semiconductors are now manufactured right here in Phoenix,” Gallego said. “The city of Phoenix is sponsoring the first-of-its-kind apprenticeship program to help our residents benefit from those transformational investments.”
