MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A husband accused of shooting his wife multiple times has been charged with murder in Madison County.
On Sunday at 10:26 p.m., Madison County Sheriff deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting in progress in the 200 block of Steppe Court.
Upon arrival, deputies found a female victim inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities said that emergency medical crews with HEMSI and Madison County Fire & Rescue provided immediate care to the victim on the scene.
MCSO said that the woman was transported to Huntsville Hospital in critical condition, but later died from her injuries.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the woman’s husband was also transported to the hospital due to pre-existing medical concerns.
Shortly after, The Madison County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit and Major Crimes detectives responded to process the scene.
MCSO said that preliminary findings indicate the incident appears to be domestic violence-related.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office told News 19 that the husband, 64-year-old Gary Robert Wharton was arrested and charged with Homicide-Murder-Family-Gun Domestic Violence.
Wharton was booked into the Madison County Jail Monday morning around 5:30 a.m. and is being held without bond at this time.
The incident remains under investigation by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
