Amal Clooney Broke the New Cannes Film Festival Dress Code—and Looked Great Doing It

Amal Clooney stepped out at the Cannes Film Festival solo over the weekend, basking in the camera flashes like the red carpet star she is. Who needs George Clooney when you look this good?

If anyone knows how to make a fashion statement, it’s the human rights activist, and she did just that in a glamorous black ball gown that defied the festival’s strict new dress code. Per the festival’s website, guests are no longer permitted to wear “voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater.” The festival’s “welcoming teams” can prohibit access to the red carpet if a guest’s outfit is found to defy the rules.

Clooney’s stunning mermaid dress is a vintage design from the Galliano era at Christian Dior, and features an off-the-shoulder neckline and yes, a long train. Seeing as she was allowed on the red carpet, it’s safe to say that festival organizers found the dress’s train to be an acceptable length. How large is a “large train” anyway? The ambiguity leaves a lot of room for interpretation—and, apparently trains about three-feet in length.

The 47-year-old’s full-look is classic Clooney—minimalist and vintage but still super glam. She accessorized with a simple black clutch and diamond drop earrings. Her decision to forgo a necklace or bracelets feels deliberate, symbolic of her sense of balance.

Whether or not you think she broke the dress code, I think we can all agree that it would be impossible to say “no” to Amal Clooney. Denying her the opportunity to serve? Criminal!
