Summary

  • Scarlett Johansson speaks on returning as Black Widow to the MCU in any capacity
  • She confirms she misses her co-stars but has no plans to reprise her role
  • Johansson wants Black Widow to have her hero moment from her sacrificial death in Avengers: Endgame

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Scarlett Johansson opened up about her future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To fans’ dismay, she confirms to the publication that she will not be returning as Black Widow in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film, nor any other future Marvel project.

It appears that her time in the MCU is coming to an end, and while she admits that she misses spending time with her co-stars, she understands that Natasha Romanoff’s sacrificial death in Avengers: Endgame was the perfect send-off for her and her character. While she is aware of Black Widow’s significance to the MCU and the impact she has had on the storyline, Johansson is ready to step away. Johansson said, “It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play. I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that. For fans too — it’s important for them.”

Johansson last played the character in 2021’s Black Widow which has introduced fans to Yelena Belova and Red Guardian, who are now central to the MCU plot. Black Widow was considered one of the original six Avengers and while the character is not slated to be back, her legacy continues through Florence Pugh’s Yelena.
