Jac Caglianone Headed To Triple-A; Prospect On Fast Track To Royals Outfield?

The Kansas City Royals have promoted top prospect Jac Caglianone to Triple-A Omaha, and with the current state of the Royals outfield, the former first-round pick may not be there very long.

Caglianone began the season in Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and after hitting .322 with nine home runs, was promoted one step closer to his major league debut.

The Royals’ outfield has struggled through the start of this season, and the Royals have attempted to make the No. 6 pick in last year’s MLB draft one of the solutions to their myriad of outfield problems. The Royals made the transition for Caglianone to be developed as an outfielder with franchise legend Salvador Perez and fan favorite Vinnie Pasquantino locking up much of the playing time at designated hitter and first base.

The Royals’ outfield ranks 28th in Major League Baseball in WAR, and while the team is in a place where it will need to push to get to the top of its division, led by the Detroit Tigers, Caglianone may be the spark that is needed to put them over the top. Caglianone is a top-10 prospect and is highly touted for his bat, something the Royals could certainly use more of.

Caglianone could strengthen the Royals’ lineup, which would force opposing teams to pitch to their established hitters with his pop following them in the lineup. Caglianone has only appeared in games as a corner outfielder in the minors and never in centerfield, so the Royals would have to go searching for a reliable option when the trade deadline approaches.

If Caglianone hits as well in Omaha as he did in Double-A, the Royals’ top prospect could be on the fast track down US-29, bound for Kauffman Stadium.
