FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — Botox is used for more than smoothing fine lines and wrinkles; it can be used for several health conditions – a little poke that goes a long way.

Botox is a substance used for cosmetic but also medical purposes. Doctor Hillary Delarosa, with Complete Aesthetic Care in Florence, told News 19 how exactly Botox works.

“It’s a minute, minute amount of medication that is very, very diluted and when it works it actually blocks and inhibits the nerve fiber from communicating with the muscle, and it allows the muscle to stay in a relaxe,d wonderful position,” Delarosa said.

Getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles may come to mind when you think of Botox, but it is used as a medical treatment and option for several conditions.

“Migraine headaches, hyperthyroidism, excessive sweating of the armpits, the palms of the hands, soles of the feet,” Delarosa said. “You can use it for bruxism, or clinching or grinding of the teeth, TMJ dysfunction of this joint here, muscle spasms or contractures when your eyelid twitches, overactive bladder, there are many things it can be used for.”

Doctor Delarosa said she injects several patients with chronic migraines, and this is how it works.

“A lot of it is the upper face, but then also, the sides of the head, the back of the head, back of the next, back of the shoulder, especially women we carry a lot of our tension right here, and when we relax those muscles we know we are being successful at decreasing the severity of your migraines, also frequency,” Delarosa said.

Delarosa’s advice to anyone on the fence about getting Botox?

“Don’t even think about it, it’s so easy, it takes just a couple of minutes there’s a few little pokes, people do very well, it’s not something you have to keep up with it, but it is something that’s beneficial if you’re consistent,” Delarosa said.

Delarosa also said you can schedule a consultation at Complete Aesthetics Care in Florence, and she will walk you through what you may need.
