World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is looking to complete his domination of the 2025 PGA Championship. He entered Sunday’s final round with a three shot lead and playing out of his mind.
Meanwhile, his playing partner from the first two rounds, Xander Schauffele, barely reached the weekend.
Schauffele has been battling a rib injury that cost him nearly two months this year. But he appears to be improving, slowly.
After signing for a 3-under 68, helping him finish in red figures at 1-under, he detailed his performance.
“The goal was to try to backdoor a top 10. I’m still in need of points. So that was my motivation today.”
He did not quite reach that goal, but will still post a solid finish at the PGA Championship.
Xander Schauffele Digs into Driver Testing
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Rory McIlroy’s driver had been flagged by the USGA. It was deemed non-conforming, forcing the reigning Masters champion to switch out the head.
McIlroy then happened to have an atrocious week driving the golf ball.
Apparently, he may not have been the only one who made a change.
Shortly after his round, Schauffele met with Golfweek. He discussed the driver testing process and even shared some interesting information.
“I think they should test everyone’s driver,” Schauffele said.
“It’s not right to just test 50 guys. It just doesn’t make sense if you’re in it for the spirit [of the game]. The whole point of it is to protect the integrity of the field. If you don’t test everyone across the board I don’t think you’re protecting the whole field.”
It certainly is a curious practice to only test some of the field. But McIlroy might not have been the only player to fail the test.
“I think Scott [Scheffler] is winning the tournament and I think he switched to his backup too,” Schauffele said.
“See you don’t even know because he’s so good. We can deal with it because the [equipment] reps are so good now.”
McIlroy did not speak to the media after any of his four rounds at Quail Hollow. It is unknown whether that was frustration, or simply never being in contention.
Meanwhile, Scheffler, who once held a commanding lead at the 107th PGA Championship, has watched as Jon Rahm has closed the gap to a single stroke.
Both players are playing the back nine in what is surely to be a thrilling finish.
