Horses in the 150th Preakness Stakes
The field of nine horses will reach the starting gate at Pimlico Race Course at 7:02 pm ET. These are all the contenders, along with morning-line odds.
Goal Oriented (6-1): Trained by Bob Baffert, who has the record with eight Preakness wins. The undefeated colt has only entered two races, with neither of those being a stakes race.
Journalism (8-5): The favorite after a great trip in the Kentucky Derby, where a aloppy track may have held him back.
American Promise (15-1): Could give 89-year-old trainer D. Wayne Lukas his record-tying 8th win at the Preakness Stakes. Coming off a rough trip in the derby (16th).
Heart of Honor (12-1): Bred in the UK, making most of his starts in Dubai. The jockey is Saffie Osborne, the 23-year-old daughter of the trainer.
Pay Billy (20-1): Purchased for only $60,000 last year. Needed four appearances to break his maiden but has won four of his last five starts.
River Thames (9-2): Earned enough points to run in the Kentucky Derby, but connections decided to rest. Gives Todd Pletcher a great chance at his first Preakness win.
Sandman (4-1): A popular pick in the derby that finished 7th. Bought for $1.2 million, connections hope the Arkansas Derby winner has enough gas in the tank after racing two weeks ago.
Clever Again (5-1): Son of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Trained by Steve Asmussen, who has won this race multiple times. In great form, but not many races to go off of.
Gosger (20-1): Needs much faster times to compete with this field. Names after former MLB player Jim Gosger, the colt won the G3 Lexington Stakes in his last start.
