HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Arts Huntsville debuted a new sculpture Saturday at Archer Park in Huntsville, and the unique approach to its design highlights a young artist’s work.
Nora Ward, a local third grader, was one of dozens of students asked to contribute their drawings to the collaborative sculpture. It all began with a blank sheet of paper.
“It took several tries, but then I got it,” said Ward.
She chose to draw two butterflies.
“This is supposed to be the mom, and this is supposed to be the baby,” Ward said while pointing out her design. “I got inspired by my mom and how we have a connection, so I wanted to make it like a connection between two butterflies.”
Ward said she was excited to see her art displayed in the park, and the sculptor’s creator, Gwyer Sinclair, said that was a feeling he wanted the project to inspire in people.
“When the kids come out from local schools and they see their work out here in public in person, they can point at what they did,” Sinclair said. “They can look at what their friends did, and they can see it, permanent, you know, they’ve had an effect on their world.”
As an artist, Sinclair works with many different mediums, but for this project, he recreated the drawing in metal and arranged them on columns.
“I thought something would go great here that was really in connection with the community,” Sinclair said.
The installation is named “Community Pillars.” Sinclair said he hopes people connect with it and young artists are inspired to keep creating.
Ward said she planned to continue making art.
“It’s really important that I try to share my artwork to everybody,” Ward said. “So that everybody can see that I am myself.”
Huntsville City Councilman Bill Kling told News 19 this project is one of several happening in the neighborhood, including street resurfacing, the addition of a roundabout, and other enhancements at the park.
