The Republican infighting over President Donald Trump‘s sweeping budget proposal intensified Friday as Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene launched a scathing public attack on several GOP colleagues, accusing them of sabotaging the party’s slim House majority.
Why It Matters
Trump’s budget package, dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, failed to pass the House Budget Committee on Friday after five GOP lawmakers joined all Democrats to vote against it.
What To Know
On Friday, Greene dispute blasted four Republicans who seek steeper spending cuts— Representatives Chip Roy of Texas, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma and Andrew Clyde of Georgia — who voted against advancing Trump’s tax and spending package when the House Budget Committee met to vote on the bill. A fifth Republican Lloyd Smucker of Pennsylvania said he switched his vote from a “yes” to a “no” due to a “procedural requirement to preserve the committee’s opportunity to reconsider the motion to advance [the bill].”
“This group, Clyde, Roy, Norman, and Brecheen are all in nice red seats and I think they are screwing things up just as badly as RINO Mike Lawler,” Greene wrote on X, using the acronym for “Republican In Name Only.”
She further said that these lawmakers “never supported Trump until the end of the election cycle until they had no choice.”
At the heart of Greene’s dispute with New York Representative Mike Lawler is the state and local tax deduction, or SALT, which is capped in Trump’s budget plan. Lawler and other blue-state Republicans have voiced strong opposition to the bill, with Lawler pushing to raise the cap, which the bill would increase from $10,000 to $30,000, or get rid of it, to protect constituents in high-tax states like New York.
“Now Mike Lawler is a NO on Trump’s big beautiful bill because he won’t accept a SALT cap increase from $10K to $30K per year,” Greene wrote on X on Wednesday.
“What’s the point in Republicans fighting to protect and keep re-electing ‘Republicans’ if they constantly undermine the agenda America voted for?” she asked.
Lawler replied to her post less than an hour later on X. “Shockingly the ‘Jewish Space Laser’ lady once again doesn’t have a clue what she is talking about,” he wrote, referring to a conspiracy theory once floated by Greene.
Lawler added: “By the way, the reason you enjoy a gavel is because Republicans like me have won our seats. Good luck being in the Majority if we don’t.”
What People Are Saying
Marjorie Taylor Greene said in a post on X: “This group, Clyde, Roy, Norman, and Brecheen are all in nice red seats and I think they are screwing things up just as badly as RINO Mike Lawler.
“I would argue that it is all of them that don’t appreciate our majority like I do!
“I just want to pass the big beautiful bill, Trump’s EOs, and DOGE rescission cuts and win, win, win!!
“Then we can do another reconciliation bill and hopefully get another bite at the apple to win some more!
“Lawler, Clyde, Norman, Roy, and Brecheen never supported Trump until the end of the election cycle until they had no choice. They never went to rally after rally all over the country like I did, and I went to more than anyone fighting to win. These guys have no idea what made millions of people stand in lines for hours, give Trump standing ovations, and hold their hand over their hearts and cry.
“But I do. Because I was there with them. It wasn’t SALT caps or Medicaid cuts.
“It was NO tax on tips, overtime, social security, closing the border and stopping innocent American’s like Laken Rileys from being murdered, lowering inflation to make life affordable for the average American who can no longer afford it, ending the never ending foreign wars, and Making America Healthy Again. It was MAGA and America First.
“So when I am attacking these guys for dying on their own hills where they have built their mini kingdoms, I am doing it for a reason.
“Because it is them that is throwing our majority away, and I fought too damn hard to get it to back down.”
Mike Lawler wrote on X: “My efforts to achieve a higher deduction for state and local taxes would not amount to a giveaway to the wealthy. In reality, the current $10,000 cap unfairly penalizes middle-class families—cops, firefighters, teachers, nurses, blue-collar tradespeople—in high-tax states like New York.”
Trump posted on Truth Social Friday morning: “Republicans MUST UNITE behind, ‘THE ONE, BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL!’ Not only does it cut Taxes for ALL Americans, but it will kick millions of Illegal Aliens off Medicaid to PROTECT it for those who are the ones in real need. The Country will suffer greatly without this Legislation, with their Taxes going up 65%. It will be blamed on the Democrats, but that doesn’t help our Voters. We don’t need “GRANDSTANDERS” in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE! It is time to fix the MESS that Biden and the Democrats gave us. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
