Summary

  • Big Picture marks Josh Sperling’s first West Coast solo exhibition
  • The showcase will include both sculptural paintings and artistic furniture
  • Hosted by Perrotin Los Angeles, the exhibition will run from May 31 to July 3, 2025

Josh Sperling is set to unveil Big Picture, his first-ever solo showcase on the West Coast. Hosted by Perrotin Los Angeles, the showcase merges Sperling’s decade-long exploration of sculptural painting with his latest venture into functional design. Known for his mastery of form and color, the Ithaca-based artist introduces new dimensions to his work, where practicality and visual expression intertwine seamlessly. This exhibition marks a significant step in his creative journey, expanding beyond traditional canvases to embrace interactive, modular elements.

A core theme of Big Picture is Sperling’s fascination with modularity, evident in his bold furniture designs. His collection of single and two-person stools, upholstered in vibrant Kvadrat wool, reflects both his love of mid-century aesthetics and his childhood affinity for Legos. These pieces extend his signature motifs – bullseyes and double bubbles -into functional objects that encourage engagement and movement. Designed for flexibility, they can be separated or combined, transforming from individual seats into a unified sculptural arrangement that fosters both creativity and connection.

The exhibition culminates with “Swoops,” a sweeping installation of stretched canvas paintings that twist and coil in rhythmic formations. This final piece captures the energy and movement that define Sperling’s work, presenting his artistic philosophy in its most immersive form.

Josh Sperling’s Big Picture is set to be unveiled on May 31 and will remain on view at Perrotin LA until July 3, 2025.
