Oregon officials and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are renewing efforts to find a missing child who disappeared nearly 15 years ago, using new digitized records.

The Context

Kyron Horman was last seen on the morning of June 4, 2010, at Skyline Elementary School in Portland. He was 7 years old at the time. Horman, who was attending his school’s science fair, has not been heard from since, according to officials.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said hundreds of tips are received and reviewed every year. Detectives are now using modern software, digital forensics and technology to evaluate new and existing leads.

What To Know

The sheriff’s office announced on Friday that it is working with Gresham Police Department detectives to digitize and reorganize documents related to Horman’s disappearance. Thousands of pages of reports, photos and evidence will be scanned, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

The FBI‘s Behavioral Analysis Unit will then reexamine the case.

Horman is described as a white male with brown hair and blue eyes. He has a V-shaped strawberry birthmark on his forehead.

At the time of Horman’s disappearance, he was wearing a black T-shirt with “CSI” in green letters and a handprint graphic, black cargo pants, white socks and black Skechers sneakers with orange trim. He may have been wearing glasses at the time.

What People Are Saying

Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell, in a statement: “We have never stopped searching for Kyron. We remain steadfast in our commitment to bring resolution to this case, for Kyron, for his family and for the community. With the support of our partners and the public, we are actively pursuing every credible investigative opportunity. Kyron and his family are at the heart of our work.”

Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez, in a statement: “As we approach the 15th anniversary of Kyron Horman’s disappearance, I want to reaffirm my continued commitment to this case. My office has begun a thorough and methodical review of the case with fresh eyes, and we look forward to receiving further analysis from the Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. Our focus remains where it has always belonged—on Kyron and his family.”

What Happens Next

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office detectives will meet with Vasquez and his team for further evaluation in the coming months.

A $50,000 reward is being offered for information related to Horman’s disappearance. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office TipLine at 503-988-0560. Tips can also be emailed to the sheriff’s office at [email protected].

Additionally, individuals can reach out to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST or online.
