In one of the more unlikely turns of events, the Dallas Mavericks have won the 2025 NBA Draft lottery. Despite entering the day with a 1.8 percent chance to get the first overall pick, the Mavericks will now have the opportunity to draft Duke star Cooper Flagg.

More NBA news: Mavericks Shockingly Win No. 1 Overall Pick in 2025 NBA Draft to Take Cooper Flagg

Like many others around the sports world, Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes took to social media to express his thoughts.

OMGGGGG!! Let’s goo!!!!!

— Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes) May 12, 2025

After trading star guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers during the NBA season, the Mavericks will now have another chance to add a superstar talent. Dallas already has star center Anthony Davis on the roster, as well as star guard Kyrie Irving.

More NBA news: NBA Draft Lottery History Doesn’t Favor Jazz Landing Cooper Flagg

With the Mavericks looking to go after a title next season, it remains to be seen if they will keep the pick. Many teams will likely try to pry this pick from Dallas as the offseason continues.

The team will likely take the chance to land Flagg, who many see as the next generational talent heading to the NBA. But this is a shocking turn of events, and the Mavericks come out as true winners.

The Mavericks have completely changed the narrative around the entire team with this news. General manager Nico Harrison may have saved his job due to pure luck.

During his time at Duke, Flagg helped the program reach the Final Four. While the Blue Devils didn’t win the NCAA Championship, Flagg showed that he could take his game to the next level.

For the season, he averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.4 steals per game. Flagg was able to overcome collegiate defenses fairly easily, and he will now be looking to do more of the same at the NBA level.

The Mavericks have struck gold with this unlikely bounce of the ping-pong balls, and the entire trajectory of the franchise has been altered. Dallas will now enter the offseason knowing that they won the sweepstakes to draft Flagg.
