Alabama announces new lock feature for EBT cards

ALABAMA (WHNT) — The Alabama Department of Human Resources has announced a new feature for EBT cards and SNAP beneficiaries.

DHR said EBT cards can now be locked or unlocked via the ConnectEBT app and website. The agency said the feature will allow cardholders to lock or unlock their cards to prevent potential fraudsters from making in-store or online purchases.

The agency also said cardholders can sign up for activity alerts for the accounts through text, the Connect EBT app and/or email.

DHR said cardholders can access the new features in the following ways:

  • Via the ConnectEBT App
    • Download the app.
    • Create an account or log in with your user ID and password.
    • The “Lock/Unlock” option will be displayed on the home screen.
    • Select the “Lock/Unlock” option.
    • The client can select one of the following:
    • “Lock Card Everywhere” – This option will lock your card at ALL stores, including online.This is the DHR recommendation.
    • “Lock Card” – This option will lock your card at ALL stores outside of Alabama, but allow online purchases.
  • Via the ConnectEBT Website
    • Visit connectebt.com
    • Create an account or log in with your user ID and password.
    • On the home screen, click the tab labeled “Card”.
    • Select “Lock/Unlock” option.
    • Clients can select from one of the following:
    • “Lock Card Everywhere” – This option will lock your card at ALL stores, including online.This is the DHR recommendation.
    • “Lock Card” – This option will lock your card at ALL stores outside of Alabama, but allows online purchases.

DHR said it is committed to securing clients’ benefits and will continue to work on additional security enhancements.

DHR administers the SNAP program in the state of Alabama. You can find more information about the program on its website.
