HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — To celebrate Bus and Bike Week as well as Bike to Work Week, Huntsville Transit is set to offer free rides to bicyclists.

From May 12-18, Huntsville Transit will offer free Orbit fixed-route bus rides for riders with bicycles.

The promotion is part of Healthy Huntsville’s Bike Month. Its purpose is to encourage residents in the community to explore eco-friendly transportation options, but also to allow people to discover the benefits of combining biking with public transit, the City of Huntsville said.

“Whether you’re commuting to work, running errands or just enjoying the outdoors, this is a great opportunity to see how Orbit buses can enhance your journey,” Quisha Bryant, Director of Parking and Public Transportation, said. “Each Orbit bus is equipped with a front-mounted bike rack, making it easy to transition between pedaling and public transit.”

The City said Bus and Bike Week aligns with national efforts to promote sustainable and healthy habits as well as reduce traffic congestion. The City said it hopes the free fare week will motivate more people to try cycling and consider using public transit as part of their regular routine.

“Integrating biking with bus riding is not only good for your health but also good for our community,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “It’s one more way we’re making Huntsville a more connected, accessible and livable city.”
