A week after his loss in the UK’s High Court over who should pay for his security and his indignant BBC interview where he called himself the victim of “an establishment stitch-up” and said “his life was at stake,” Prince Harry is once again in the UK headlines.
The Sun newspaper reports that, during his stay in London last month on a visit to make his case in court, Harry was caught on camera in a London street, knocking at the wrong doors of several townhouses as a he attempted to find his friend.
The Sun has published pictures from a doorbell camera, showing a smartly dressed Harry ringing at one door, and reports he said at the time he was “looking for a friend.”
And it quotes a local in the street saying: “Two of the houses he knocked at are at completely opposite ends of the road, which is about half a mile long.
“It’s a bit odd he didn’t seem to have a clue which house he was aiming for.
“I don’t think many people would just walk down a road knocking on doors, let alone if you don’t feel safe.”
The UK press is having a field day with this story, coming as it does a week after Harry made an empassioned plea to the UK High Court to have his security costs covered by the state.
Following his loss in the courtroom of appeal, Harry gave an interview from California to the BBC, during which he said he felt it unsafe to travel with his family – wife Meghan Markle, children Archie and Lilibet – to the UK with his current security arrangements in place. He added that he thought his father King Charles could have stepped in to smooth out the problems, but added that the monarch was not currently speaking to him.
Charles advisors have previously clarified that the king is not in a position to help, because Harry was suing His Majesty’s Government in His Majesty’s Court, and there would be a conflict of interest if the king tried to intervene. Charles has not said anything publicly on the matter.
When Harry and his wife Meghan departed the UK in 2020 and gave up their royal duties, the then Queen Elizabeth, Harry’s grandmother clarified that the pair would have ongoing personal security arranged on an ad-hoc basis reviewed each time. Harry has said this puts him and his family in danger, and has spent several years in court arguing his case.
