After changing positions once already in 2025, Red Sox veteran Rafael Devers isn’t keen on returning to a different infield position even after the season-ending injury to first baseman Triston Casas.

Rafael Devers spoke with Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow about potentially taking over the first base position. It did not go well.
“Yeah. I don’t think they stay true to their word,” Devers said, via Christopher Smith of MassLive.com on Twitter/X. “They told me I was going to be playing this position, DH. And now they are going back on that. So yeah, I don’t think they stay true to their word.”
Rafael Devers asked if he was upset the Red Sox asked him to consider first base, “Yeah. I don’t think they stay true to their word. They told me I was going to be playing this position, DH. And now they are going back on that. So yeah, I don’t think they stay true to their word”

Smith also reported Devers said “no” when asked if he thinks there’s a chance he could change his mind about playing first base.
“I don’t think so,” Devers said, via Smith. “They told me I’m a little hard-headed. They already asked me to change once and this time I don’t think I can be as flexible.”

Of Breslow specifically, Devers said “I’m not sure what he has with me.”

Devers, 28, got off to a slow start but is now slashing .246/.370/.430 with five home runs in his first 38 games of the season. He was squeezed off the third base position when Breslow signed Alex Bregman to a $120 million free agent contract in the offseason.
Bregman, the reigning American League Gold Glove Award winner at third base, is off to a torrid start, slashing .327/.401/.612 with an AL-leading 15 doubles. So far, neither he nor Devers has logged an inning at Boston’s most pressing position of need: first base.
Casas left the field on a stretcher last Friday after sustaining a ruptured patellar tendon running out a ground ball. He underwent season-ending surgery and is not expected back until 2026.

In the short term, Boston will turn to Romy Gonzalez as their primary fill-in at first base. Infielder Abraham Toro was also recalled from Triple-A Worcester and has rotated in at first base with Gonzalez.
In the long term, who will play first base for the Red Sox remains unclear. Apparently it won’t be Devers.
Rafael Devers on Red Sox: “Now I think they should do their job essentially and hit the market and look for another player (to play first base). I’m not sure why they want me to be in between the way they have me now.”
