If you lived in Pacific Palisades before the firestorm, chances are your kids hung out at Paliskates—the skate shop that was a teen gathering hot spot.
All of that changed on January 7—four months ago—when flames leveled much of the Palisades and changed the landscape forever. Paliskates didn’t stand a chance.
At the time, owner Erica Simpson spoke with KTLA about what Paliskates meant to the community, saying, “I love the culture, the community, and I wanted to make a place in the Palisades for the kids.” And it was. For 25 years, it was the skate culture hub.
Now, the woman behind “Sk8er Boi” is teaming up to help Paliskates rebuild.
Avril Lavigne has designed a custom limited-edition hoodie on sale now on the Paliskates Instagram page, and they say 100% of the proceeds will go directly to supporting and rebuilding Paliskates.
Lavigne wasn’t available for comment on the story with KTLA, but online the retailer says, “Thank you, Avril Lavigne, for stepping up, helping us dust off and hit the pavement again.”
A message titled “Rebuild Paliskates” on the store’s website says, “We are going to use this tragic event to bounce back stronger than ever. This is not the end of 1021 N Swarthmore Ave. We, along with all Palisades residents, will unite and rebuild our beloved community. Thank you for all of the memories and support.”
Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi” was the second single from her debut album, and the 2002 track, which was a Billboard Hot 100 top 10 single, has gone triple platinum in the years since its release.
Two decades later, the single is still heard on alt rock radio—and it is still making an impact.
