The first Monday in May has come and gone, and fashion and pop culture fans alike are dying to know why Beyoncé didn’t attend the 2025 Met Gala.
Not unlike her pop music co-queen Taylor Swift, Beyoncé was once a Met Gala regular—but hasn’t been back since 2016. Beyoncé first attended the Met Gala in 2008, per Teen Vogue, returned for a second time in 2011, and then made an appearance every year until 2017—making 2016 her last Met appearance. Fans were already speculating that Swift might break her Met Gala hiatus in 2025 (spoiler: she didn’t), so why wouldn’t Queen Bey?
Well, for one thing, Beyoncé has a little bit of a scheduling conflict with her Cowboy Carter tour, which kicked off in Los Angeles in late April. She performed at the Los Angeles SoFi Stadium on May 4 and has another show at the SoFi Stadium on May 7, before she heads to Chicago for her May 15 tour date. Theoretically, we suppose, Bey could have made an early flight from LA to New York City in order to make a quick Met Gala appearance on May 5, then fly back to LA just in time for her next show…but that would have been asking a whole heck of a lot, even of Beyoncé.
We can’t deny that it’s a bit of a bummer not to see Beyoncé at the Met Gala, because every look she’s ever delivered on the red steps has been incredible. On her first Met Gala outing, Bey went understated in a pale pink column gown by Armani Privé.
However, after that Beyoncé’s gala gowns became more and more extravagant and creative. Since 2012 she’s worn strictly Givenchy. In 2016, her last gala, she wore a peach Givenchy latex gown with floral embellishments for the year’s “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” theme.
