Kamala Harris has run for (and held) public office, and on Monday, at the Met Gala 2025, she walked into New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, joining a few hundred carefully selected invitees for fashion’s biggest night.
The former vice president and recent Democratic presidential candidate, whose turbocharged run ended up a loss to Donald Trump, has kept a relatively low profile since the election in November 2024. She is reportedly working on a book, and rumors have swirled about a run for California governor, or even another presidential bid in 2028. On Monday evening, however, the staid pant suits and softly feminine bow-neck blouses of her abbreviated campaign were nowhere to be found as Harris stepped out for the annual fundraiser for the Met’s Costume Institute.

In a nod to the night’s dress code, Tailored for You, in support of the institute’s spring exhibit, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” Harris wore a bespoke black and cream silk Off-White dress, featuring colorblocking and a dramatic trailing sleeve, as well as a black scarf that doubled as a diminutive train for the look.
Off-White creative director IB Kamara praised Harris in a statement Monday. “The precise simplicity of this black and cream look for Kamala D. Harris complements her own strength and confidence, two qualities I consider to be the core of dandyism,” he said.
This marks Harris’s Met Gala debut. Of course, Harris and her family are no strangers to high fashion: Her stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, made her own Met Gala debut in 2021, donning a red Adidas by Stella McCartney mesh bodysuit, oversized trousers, and red sneakers. Emhoff also walked in New York Fashion Week shows last year and made several front-row appearances to take in the new collections. While Harris stuck to more sartorially conservative silhouettes by high-end designers during her campaign, Emhoff wowed from the audience in looks by Thom Browne, Helmut Lang, and more.
