Summary

  • The Met Gala 2025’s theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” exploring the history and impact of Black menswear and dandyism
  • The dress code encouraged classic tailoring, embraced dandyism’s flair and paid homage to Black fashion icons
  • Co-hosts Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Zendaya, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell and more showed up in their own interpretations of the “Tailored For You” dress code

The First Monday of May is fashion’s most talked about night, ringing in Met Gala‘s annual haute couture benefit for the Costume Institute. Like all the Met Gala’s that came before, Met Gala 2025 once again brought in the looks and the drama, this time celebrating “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This year’s theme was a groundbreaking exploration of the profound and enduring influence of Black menswear and dandyism on global fashion. This marked the first menswear-focused Met Gala theme in over two decades, since “Men in Skirts” in 2003 and was also the first ever to exclusively spotlight Black designers and sartorial history.

Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s seminal 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” the Costume Institute’s exhibition and the Met Gala aimed to unpack the multifaceted concept of dandyism as both an aesthetic and a strategic tool. It highlighted how Black individuals, from the 18th century to the present day, have utilized clothing and style to forge identities, challenge social hierarchies, and assert their presence and self-determination within societies shaped by racial, gender, and class dynamics. The exhibition was structured into twelve sections, each representing a defining characteristic of Black dandy style, such as Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Freedom, Heritage, and Cosmopolitanism.

The accompanying dress code, “Tailored For You,” served as both a guide and an invitation for creative interpretation. Celebrities embraced the theme in diverse and compelling ways. From honoring classic tailor with impeccably tailored suits, ranging from classic black and white tuxedos to more contemporary and colorful iterations. Co-host Zendaya delivered a masterclass in tailoring with a sharp, all-white three-piece suit byLouis Vuitton, complete with a tie and a wide-brimmed hat. Another co-host, Colman Domingo made a striking entrance in a dramatic, glittering azure cape by Valentino. Later, he removed the cape to reveal a pearl-embellished checked blazer, showcasing a flamboyant take on dandyism. Teyana Taylor‘s look was also memorable, paying homage to Black icons and styles, referencing historical Black sartorial movements. Taylor’s Zoot Suit-inspired ensemble, created in collaboration with Ruth E. Carter, was a powerful homage to a significant era in Black fashion history. Others had a more personal interpretation of “Tailored,” with Rihanna debuting her baby bump wearing a custom Marc Jacobs ensemble that featured her in a tilted hat and confident demeanor channeled a modern take on early 20th-century dandy style. Co-host A$AP Rocky also stood out in a custom suit designed by his creative agency, AWGE, paired with a black parka and a diamond-crested umbrella. His self-designed look offered a unique and personal interpretation of the “Tailored For You” dress code.

Take a look at the most talked about looks above.
