COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Several Colbert County Schools were placed under a secure perimeter Tuesday.
Colbert County Schools said around 10 a.m., the district was notified by law enforcement about an “extreme ongoing investigation” in eastern Colbert County. As a result of the situation, and out of caution, safety protocols were enacted, placing Hatton Elementary, Leighton Elementary, and Colbert County High School on Secure Perimeter.
“This is a law enforcement situation with no known threat to any campus, student, or staff. None of our schools have been placed in lockdown, as there is no threat to any campus,” CCS said.
The school system said they are continuing to receive updates from law enforcement and will make any necessary adjustments.
Sheriff Balentine told News 19 that “this morning, we got a call about a 15-year-old male who supposedly stole a weapon from his grandfather from a safe and stole his grandfather’s car. Former student at Colbert County High School, just a precautionary measure, there is no lockdown, actively trying to find him. Sheriff says they will be giving a vehicle description soon for the community to keep their eyes out for.”
News 19 has reached out to the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office to learn more about this incident and will update this story as information is provided.
