EXCLUSIVE: The Black List will open submissions for the 2025 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting via its website at 9 a.m. PDT on May 15.
The widely known industry platform for promising writers serves as the public portal for Nicholl submissions and will receive up to 2,500 eligible entries. From those submissions, The Black List will recommend up to 25 eligible feature screenplays, based on the strength of the scripts, to the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting.
Writers, and writing teams, can submit a maximum of one screenplay. Scripts must be hosted on The Black List website for submission and must have at least one evaluation attached to the script that is being submitted. Submissions will be open until June 15, 2025, or until the maximum number of 2,500 eligible submissions is reached — whichever occurs first.
In addition to The Black List, other official Nicholl partners — including the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment, NYU Tisch School of Arts, UCLA’s Screenwriting Program and many others — will also submit scripts for fellowship consideration.
Founded in 1986 as an international program to nurture up-and-coming scribes, the Don and Gee Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting announced back in March its partnership with global university programs, screenwriting labs and filmmaking organizations to select Nicholl fellows. Each partner will vet and submit scripts for consideration for an Academy Nicholl Fellowship, and The Black List will serve as a portal for public submissions. All scripts submitted by partners will be read and reviewed by Academy members.
Nicholl fellows receive support from AMPAS and mentorship from an Academy member throughout their fellowship year. They also participate in a week of virtual seminars, an online meet-and-greet with the Nicholl Fellowships committee and in-person networking events. These fellows then receive ongoing career mentorship via the Gold Alumni Program, which provides continued access, opportunity, professional development and education for alumni of the Academy’s talent development programs.
