HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Huntsville Police Department said one person was arrested after he tried to flee from police after driving through a closed-off roadway in April.
On April 29, around 6:30 p.m., HPD said an officer was directing traffic due to a downed power line near 14th Street and Holmes Avenue.
During this time, the department said 39-year-old Antonio Darnell Hayes bypassed the police vehicle and entered the closed-off roadway. When the officer tried to stop Hayes’ vehicle, he refused to pull over and began to flee in his vehicle.
HPD said the pursuit was low-speed and officers employed a maneuver called a rolling roadblock to end the chase. The second attempt at this maneuver brought Hayes and his vehicle to a stop, however, he stayed inside his vehicle. The department said instead of getting out of the vehicle, he used it to ram two patrol cars to create a gap in which he continued to evade police.
The department said Hayes eventually came to a stop at University Drive and Putman. Following a “brief struggle,” officers were able to remove him from the vehicle and he was arrested on the following charges:
- Driving through a barricade or closed road
- Two counts of leaving the scene of an accident
- Resisting Arrest
- Attempting to elude a police officer- collision
- Driving under the influence of a controlled substance
He was booked into the Madison County Jail on May 4 with a bond set at $7,600.
