The 2025 Kentucky Derby has come and gone, giving fans another exciting finish. Sovereignty defeated Journalism down the stretch to win the 151st Kentucky Derby.
Baeza finished third in the race, while Final Gambit came in fourth. In fifth place came Owen Almightly, followed by Burnham Square in sixth place, Sandman in seventh, East Avenue in eighth, and Chunk of Gold in ninth place.
The win by Sovereignty snapped a 0-for-13 skid from owner Godolphin. It also gave trainer Bill Mott his second win at the Derby, cementing his legacy in the event.
His first win at the Derby came in 2019 when Country House took down Maximum Security. It was a controversial event, however, because Maximum Security actually crossed the finish line first, but ended up being disqualified during a 22-minute delay.
Mott reflected on the win, taking in all the glory behind it.
“This one got there the right way,” the Hall of Fame trainer said. “I mean, he’s done well, he’s a great horse, he comes from a great organization, and I can’t say enough about the horse and the organization that started him out and made this happen.”
Mott revealed that this victory was going to take a while to fully sink in. But the trainer also couldn’t hold back his excitement.
“It’s great,” Mott said. “I think it will take a little while to sink in.”
“I’ve had quite a long relationship with the Godolphin team and the man behind the Godolphin operation, Sheikh Mohammed,” Mott said. “I’m just honored.”
The event was filled with heavy rain, making for a very muddy track for the competitors to deal with. There were heavy puddles all over, and it may have played a role in the eventual outcome.
Entering the Derby, Journalism was the odds-on favorite to win, entering on a four-race winning streak. Sovereignty was a little behind in terms of odds, making this outcome extremely special all around.
All in all, it was a strong event for the sport, with many people tuning in to watch it unfold. The Kentucky Derby is a staple of the sports calendar year, and always seems to deliver in the best way possible.
