PHOENIX — Train activity in Phoenix is set to increase as the Valley Metro and the city prepare for the opening of the South Central Extension in June, according to a Friday announcement.
As part of the South Central Extension, which is set to open on June 7, trains will operate more in the following areas:
- Fifth Street to Third Avenue along Washington and Jefferson Streets
- McKinley Street to Sherman Street along Central and First Avenues
- Sherman Street to Baseline Road along Central Avenue.
As part of the light rail activity, the following platforms and stations will be closed until June 7:
- Washington Street west of Central Avenue
- Jefferson Street west of Central Avenue
- Central Avenue between Jefferson and Washington streets
- Lincoln and First Avenue
- Lincoln and Central Avenue
- Buckey and Central Avenue
- Pioneer and Central Avenue
- Broadway and Central Avenue
- Roeser and Central Avenue
- Southern and Central Avenue
- Baseline and Central Avenue.

The South Central Extension extends the light rail system from downtown to south Phoenix.
The extension includes a new light rail transit hub, eight new stations, 14 new trains, public art, a new park-and-ride lot at Baseline and Central Avenue with 110 parking spaces, improved bike lanes and pedestrian pathways.
The extension spans 5.5 miles and connects with the existing light rail system near Jefferson Street and Central Avenue.
