The New York Mets are off to the best start in baseball, sitting in first place in the National League East division after a 22-11 start.
The team built on a Cinderella run all the way to the National League Championship Series last season by adding superstar slugger Juan Soto and All-Star pitcher Clay Holmes, while also retaining frontline ace Sean Manaea and homegrown first baseman Pete Alonso on new contracts.
But after a playoff contender over in the American League suffered a brutal injury setback, the Mets could be looking to offload some of their peripheral talent.
“The Boston Red Sox were dealt a major loss on Friday night,” RJ Anderson reported for CBS Sports. “First baseman Triston Casas ruptured his left patellar tendon after landing awkwardly on the bag during the second inning. Casas, who was carted off the field, had been attempting to leg out an infield single.”
The Red Sox face several options in replacing Casas. In the near term, they seem set on moving Romy González and Abraham Toro into the spot. But a more permanent solution might require a trade and the Red Sox could be calling the Mets about veteran first baseman Jon Singleton.
“Singleton would seem to mostly fit the Red Sox’s needs: he’s a lefty hitter who produced league-average offense last year in a platoon role with the Houston Astros,” per Anderson. “He’s certainly not going to leapfrog Pete Alonso anytime soon. One has to imagine the Mets would be willing to ship him to Boston if the Red Sox show interest.”
Singleton joined the Mets on a minor league contract in April and if the Red Sox can deal something of more immediate value to Queens, the Mets would certainly be willing to listen to a trade offer.
