Boston Red Sox star Triston Casas left the field on a stretcher Friday after he was injured running out a ground ball in the second inning against the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park.

The first baseman tried to beat out the throw from Twins pitcher Joe Ryan when he slipped, fell to the ground, and did not rise on his own power.
According to WEEI on Twitter/X, the injury appeared to affect Casas’ left knee.

Casas, 25, hit 24 home runs in 2023, when he finished third in American League Rookie of the Year voting. Injuries limited him to 63 games last year, and now he could be in for another long stay on the injured list.

In 28 games this season, Casas was hitting .184 with a .585 OPS.
Casas missed nearly four full months last season with torn cartilage on the left side of his rib cage.
Any extended absence by Casas will likely prompt calls for the Red Sox to promote outfielder Roman Anthony, the number-1 prospect in baseball.

Although the Red Sox have resisted moving him to first base, Anthony’s hitting prowess could leave Boston’s front office with little choice.
Anthony, 20, entered Friday’s game with a .290/.422/.527 slash line in 26 games at Triple-A Worcester. He’s walked (22) nearly as many times as he has struck out (25).

A second-round pick by the Red Sox out of high school in 2022, Anthony was a consensus Top-30 prospect in baseball entering the 2024 season. He took part in that year’s Futures Game.
Casas was replaced in Friday’s game by Romy Gonzalez.

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told repoters after the game that Casas has a “significant knee injury” and that the first baseman was in shock when he went out to the field.

Although Cora did not provide an exact diagnosis or a timetable for Casas’ return, the manager told reporters he expects Casas’ stay on the injured list to be the opposite of brief.

Before he was injured on Friday, Casas had played 233 out of a total of 293 innings in the field at first base for Boston this season. He’s a career .242 hitter with a .348 on-base percentage and .453 slugging percentage in 250 MLB games since his 2022 debut.
